Pisanki (Polish Painted Eggs)

Although it is a little late for Easter, but I wanted to share a photo of these special eggs. They are painted wooden eggs given to me by my grandmother who brought them with her when she moved to the USA after World War II. Called Pisanki in Poland and Belarus, they are popular in many eastern European countries, where they go by other names as well, such as Pysanka in the Ukraine, kraslice in Czechoslovakia. Originally of pagan origin, they were incorporated into christian traditions and continued to be shared as symbols of friendship to this day.
